My Wagon Is Dragging

and I'm moving in slow-mo this morning. It was a tiring weekend. The boys are draggin' too, because I've heard very little from them this morning. But while we're on a Good Thing kick:

  • It's a beautiful sunny day outside! If it has to be a Monday, it might as well a beautiful one, right?
  • John made the boys clean the upstairs yesterday (including the little boys' room!) so we have a fresh start to the week
  • Becca comes home tonight. She's been on a trip to Louisiana for the last several days with her best friend's family. I'm sure she will be wiped too, but she promised me that the two of them would do their schoolwork on the trip. We'll see.

I have to help the little boys finish up their co-op this morning, do my grading for co-op report cards, and this afternoon, I'll go with my mom to take the moving truck back. Happy Monday, ya'll.

Good Things

  • Last week of co-op: Yeee-HA!
  • Brooke White made it through another week of American Idol! I love Brooke, but I don't think she'll make it much farther. I like David Archuletta too, but I'm ready to buy Brooke's first album right now.
  • My parents are here for the summer! They have rented a cute duplex nearby, and we have been helping them move in this weekend. My mom brought boxes of pictures, her serger and sewing machine, 50 lbs of clay and her paints- we have many plans for the next several weeks. Daddy D brought his boat, his jigsaw and his golf clubs, so the guys have many plans as well.
  • My mom and I took a road trip today to pick up the dining room suite which my grandmother gave me. My brother met us half way and drove the rest of the way with us to help move it. The suite has been in my Uncle Johnny's basement, but it's too nice to go in my house with messy and careless little boys. Uncle Johnny has been gently reminding me that he would really like to have his basement back, and we can put it in the duplex for now. One major thing off the "to-do" list! We stopped in to see Granny while we were in town, and although she was tickled to see us, tonight she won't remember that we came.
  • I got a super price at an online auction for two levels of the math Philip and Becca are using. Now if only I could find John Mark's... I'd be set for the next two years!
  • John finally got the new computer purchased and set up for the children's ministry at church. (We highly do NOT recommend Windows Vista- frustration, frustration!) But another major thing done.
  • John and I have a vacation in the works! We're using points from all the travel he did last year. We considered Hawaii, but decided to save that for a longer trip later. We considered going out west, but since we don't have a full week, we figured we really didn't want to spend two whole days of our trip in airports and airplanes, so... it's the East Coast. We were planning on going to Newport, but we didn't get the plans made in time, so the current plan is Washington D.C. I lived there for two years in high school and have Been There and Done That, but John hasn't. Besides, I've always wanted to go to Mt. Vernon, and I'd love to take him to see my high school haunts. The plane tickets aren't purchased yet, so I guess we still have options. I'm just too tired to entertain the thought of a "walking" vacation right now. A book by the pool or a cabin in the mountains sounds much more relaxing, but by June, I'll be ready for an adventure.
  • The last of the school-year activities are winding down! AWANA ended the first week in April and the Children's Chorus concert is next Sunday. After the last Generation Joshua meeting and then the piano recital, we will be done until it all starts again in August. But we won't think about August right now.
  • John got his garden plowed and it's ready for planting. He purchased a teenage slave servant at the camp fundraiser at church with this job in mind. I love the look and the feel of freshly turned soil- it always seems to promise wonderful things!
  • Garage sale season is starting again, and I love a good garage sale! Of course, I have yet to find a good garage sale this season, but I know it's coming. I can feel it. I love spring!

I Guess This Means She's Ours

This is what you will find upon our front porch on any given day: muddy boy-shoes, yucky boy-socks (in the summer, add a varied selection of flip-flops and sandals), and now... a dog!

Apparently, she's been wandering the area for some time, but two weeks ago, the spring fever finally hit at our house and during her wanderings, she found our five kids rolling and running in the yard. She stayed to play, and when they fed her afterward, she figured she was in dog heaven.

Nathanael promptly named her "Copper," and John groused and complained about her for the next two weeks. She is a beagle mix, with the wanderlust and sing-song bark of a hunting dog. She was probably abused, she is way too interested in our neighbors' garages, and she has a bad habit of running right up to passing cars. "She's going to get herself shot!" John pronounced. "She's going to get herself run over!" I grumbled. But for all that, she is very sweet-natured, she adores the kids, and she loves to play. I figured her wanderlust would lead her off to other parts after a day or so, but she has made our front porch her base of operations. Becca continued to badger her father about letting the dog stay, and finally, John told Becca that this would be her dog and her problem. But Dad didn't realize that God had had a hand in this dog-business.

At church on Sunday, Becca asked me for $10 of her banked money. When I asked why, she explained that she had asked God for a dog or a cat to call her own, and she had promised to give Him $10 if he sent one. Obviously, he had honored the deal, so now it was time to pay up. I had to smile and explain that God doesn't work that way: he doesn't bless us because we work out a "deal" with him; he blesses us because he loves his children and he loves to answer our prayers. But, when you make a promise, you have to keep it, so she gave her thanks offering... and we have a dog. Meet Copper:

The Nap

Today, the 6-year-old and I have been reading. The story of Peter's bad puppy, Rover, followed by a book about all the different things one could possibly see on a vacation just wore us both plumb out. He was already curled next to me on the arm of my Lazy Boy (does that make it a Lazy Girl?) and when I stretched out, he stretched out as well- on top of me. I felt a nap coming on, and it seemed that he did too. "Do you need a nap?" I asked him. "NO!" he said. "OK then, we'll just rest." And we did- for a whole 45 minutes, while the brothers shushed each other in the background so I wouldn't wake up and interrupt their clandestine computer game. It's been, oh, about four years since my baby last stretched out on my shoulder for a nap, and this time he went from shoulder all the way to my foot. I'm pretty sure neither one of us drooled, and when we awoke from our slumber, he got up and went to the potty all by himself- one of the major accomplishments of the past four years. Except for the crick in my neck and one numb foot, a nap with a six-year-old is a very nice thing.

Birthday With the Buds

The boy is fifteen today! He had a party with his best buds, with tacos, cake and ice cream at the house and then they all went to a game hangout to play xbox and Playstation on big screen TVs all evening. Word is they had a great time- even dad, who didn't stand a chance against these young hotshots. It's been a lot of fun watching them grow up together, and I am so happy John Mark has good friends to share his life, even if they are now too cool to get too close. Happy Birthday, John Mark!

Funk

I am in a blog funk... no, I'm in a whole-life funk right now. I think it's the rain. Someone even wrote me sweet poetry in an attempt to entice me out of my blog funk, but I really and truly need sunshine. And a good yard sale. And for this school year to be over. And for our taxes to be done. And for the tile to not be coming off the wall in two bathrooms. And for the new PS3 to spontaneously implode (but the beautiful new entertainment cabinet can stay- TV totally optional).

Now aren't you thankful that I haven't been blogging lately? I'll see ya'll when the sun comes back out.
